Any Fractures, Sprains, Dislocations and Instability

An adult human skeleton comprises approximately 206 bones, including the skull, spine, ribcage and limbs. The skeletal system works closely together with the muscular system to enable agility and free movement of our bodies. Bones of a healthy human are rigid and strong, but not indestructible. When the stress exerted on a bone is beyond it’s withstanding capacity, the bone begins to crack. This is known as a bone fracture.

Common Causes of Fractures

  • Direct and heavy impact to the bone
  • Landing incorrectly during high-impact sports or automobile accidents
  • Trauma

Accompanying Symptoms of Fractures

  • Visible deformation of the limb
  • Swelling, discolouration of skin or bleeding
  • Painful sensations rendering limb unusable
  • Visible protrusion of the broken bone through the skin

Common Fractures we treat

  • Hip Fracture
  • Hairline Fracture
  • Ankle and Foot Fracture
  • Ankle and Foot Fracture
  • Elbow Fracture
  • Collarbone Fracture
  • Hand and Wrist Fracture
  • Vertebral Fracture
  • Forearm Fracture
  • Shin bone (tilibia) and thigh bone (femur) Fracture

Sprains

Ligaments are a connective tissue that acts as the glue between bones, particularly in the joints. They secure the bones in the joint and prevent them from displacing too far apart and end up dislocating. A sprain occurs when the ligament is overextended or torn and often occurs in heavily-used limbs such as the ankles, knees and wrists.

Common Causes of a Sprain

  • Landing incorrectly during a fall or misstep
  • Hyperextension of a limb when breaking a fall
  • Sudden pivotal movement
  • Tripping over an uneven surface
  • Injuries from contact or racquet sports

Accompanying Symptoms of a Sprain

  • Painful sensations or tenderness
  • Deformation and discolouration
  • Muscle cramps or weakness
  • Limited mobility of the affected area
  • “Popping” sensation during the moment of injury

Common Sprains we treat

  • Ankle
  • Knee
  • Wrist
  • Thumb

Dislocations and Instability

When the ligament fails to contain the displacement of the bones at a joint, the bones are displaced from their natural position, causing interim deformation and immobilization of the joint. Continual dislocation can result in damage to the surrounding bones, making you more susceptible to dislocations in the future, also known as instability.

Common Causes of a Dislocation

  • Involvement in automobile accidents
  • High-Impact or contact sports
  • Landing incorrectly during a fall or misstep
  • Inherited Ligament Laxity

Accompanying Symptoms of a Dislocation

  • Visible deformation of joints
  • Swelling and discolouration of the area
  • Restricted or no mobility of affected joints
  • Severely painful sensations

Common Dislocations we treat

  • Shoulder
  • Elbow
  • Kneecap (patellar)
  • Knee joint
  • Hip
  • Finger
  • Collarbone
  • Wrist
  • Ankle
  • Foot
  • Partial Dislocation, also known as subluxations

Treatments

Ligaments are a connective tissue that acts as the glue between bones, particularly in the joints. They secure the bones in the joint and prevent them from displacing too far apart and end up dislocating. A sprain occurs when the ligament is overextended or torn and often occurs in heavily-used limbs such as the ankles, knees and wrists.

Pain Relievers

Apply ice to the affected areas for 20 to 30 minutes frequently to reduce the pain in the affected area. Medications and pain relievers will also help reduce inflammation and ease your discomfort. Avoid putting weight on the affected limb to prevent further injuries from forming.

Compression and Elevation

Bandage the affected area and keep the injured area raised above chest level. Should the painful sensations increase or if the affected area goes numb, loosen the wrap.

Splints or Casts

When your bone is fractured, it deforms and becomes misaligned. Casts and splints are required to hold the bones in the right position while they heal. It also reduces pain and swelling.

Corticosteroid Injections

Corticosteroid injections are anti-inflammatory medications that will be injected directly into the affected area to reduce the inflammation. This form of treatment is sometimes beneficial for specific conditions. Nonetheless, repeated injections are discouraged as they may cause further damage to the area.

Reduction

Reduction is known as popping or returning the dislocated joint back into its socket. This method should only be done by a medically trained professional to avoid further injury to the surrounding area.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is the treatment of injury and disease using non-invasive techniques. It focuses on improving your ability to move and function without pain, boosting your quality of life.

Exercises performed during a physiotherapy session aids in the strengthening of your affected muscles to minimize stiffness and improve mobility. The goal is to improve strength, increase endurance and to improve range of motion. It also helps to reduce the likelihood of future injuries.

Surgical Options

At our clinic, we generally try to explore non-surgical treatment such as activities modification, physiotherapy and orthotics before recommending invasive intervention options.

If the injury is severe, giving persistent symptoms or has not recovered satisfactorily with conservative non-surgical methods, surgical fixation or reconstruction may be beneficial.

Surgery is a big decision to make. It is essential to discuss your treatment plan thoroughly with your doctor, to ensure that you have the most comfortable treatment experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is My Pain Serious Enough For A Visit To A Specialist Orthopaedic Surgeon?

When your pain becomes more persistent, the treatment options may be beyond your GP’s expertise.

You should seek specialist medical advice from an orthopaedic surgeon if you experience any of the following:

The pain or instability interferes with daily function

  • Daily functioning can include but is not limited to, walking, climbing stairs, and getting in and out of chairs and bathtubs. The pain is persistent or recurring over an extended period.
  • The pain or instability affects your ability to enjoy your favourite activities. This may be sports or hobbies that demand a certain level of strength or stability.

Prolonged stiffness of the joint

  • If there is persistent or prolonged stiffness of the injured joint, it is recommended to see an orthopaedic specialist to determine the cause of the reduced range of motion. This is very important to reduce the risk of long lasting disability.

If your joint pain is affecting your quality of life and you cannot perform everyday activities (such as standing or walking), or participate in your favourite activities, it is highly advisable to see an orthopaedic surgeon for a detailed diagnosis and advice.

What Can I Expect At My First Visit With An Orthopaedic Surgeon?

At your first appointment with Dr. Ong, he will evaluate your medical history and the pain you are experiencing.

Depending on the symptoms you have, he will likely perform some form of diagnostic imaging (e.g. X-Rays or MRI scans) to assess your condition accurately. X-rays and CT scans are useful to rule out bony problems, whilst an MRI scan is excellent at looking at soft tissue (e.g. tendons, ligaments, cartilage) problems.

After assessing your condition, Dr. Ong will recommend a personalised treatment plan, according to your specific needs. This may include surgical or non-surgical treatment options.

Will I Need Surgery To Treat My Injury?

After diagnosis, Dr. Ong will advise an individualised treatment plan that is customized to your specific needs. The treatment plan varies from patient to patient, and the condition you have.

For less severe problems, Dr. Ong may recommend a non-surgical management plan (such as painkillers and physiotherapy) to treat your condition initially. If your symptoms do not improve or even worsen throughout this treatment, Dr. Ong will review the treatment protocol and may advise surgery.

Dr. Ong will only recommend surgical options when all other conventional non-surgical interventions have failed, or if non-surgical options will not work for your condition. For example, if you have a broken bone which is extremely painful and debilitating, you may benefit from immediate surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is My Condition Serious Enough For A Visit To A Specialist Orthopaedic Surgeon?

When specific conditions become more chronic and persistent, the treatment options may be beyond your GP’s expertise.

If you experience severe pain, or if your pain is affecting your quality of life such that you cannot perform everyday activities normally (e.g. walking, standing or wearing clothes), visiting an Orthopaedic Surgeon for a detailed assessment and diagnosis is the best course of action.

After assessing your condition, Dr. Ong will recommend a personalised treatment plan, according to your specific needs. This may include surgical or non-surgical treatment options.

Can I Continue My Sporting Activities If I Am Experiencing Pain (e.g. Shoulder, Knee or Hip Pain)?

Dr. Ong always advises patients to listen to their bodies and not push through the pain barrier, especially if your pain is a direct result of sports injuries.

If your pain does not subside with RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation) and over-the-counter painkillers, it is highly advisable that you seek professional medical advice. Continuing with sporting activities will place additional strain on your body and worsen the condition.

Will I Need Surgery To Treat My Pain?

After diagnosis, Dr. Ong will advise an individualized treatment plan that is customized to your specific needs. The treatment plan varies from patient to patient, and the condition you have.

For less severe problems, Dr. Ong may recommend a non-surgical management plan (such as painkillers and physiotherapy) to treat your condition initially. If your symptoms do not improve or even worsen over the course of this treatment, your knee specialist in Singapore, Dr.
